James A. "Jim" Sample, age 72, of San Marcos, Texas passed away on October 3, 2016. Jim was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on April 18, 1944 to A.H and Mary Sample. He graduated from Jesse Jones High School in Houston, Texas in 1962 where he was involved in 4-H and FFA and showed rabbits and sheep. Jim earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Education with focus in Engineering from Southwest Texas State Universityin San Marcos, Texas in 1974 . He served in the Air Force and was stationed in Germany and had the opportunity to travel to Africa. He further served in the reserves in San Antonio, Texas. Jim married the love of his life, Charlene Suggs Sample, on June 15, 1968 in Monroe, Louisiana. They had two children, Debra Reneé Sample in June 1970 and James Trenton Sample in August 1972.
Jim and Charlene lived in Houston, Texas where he worked for Western Electric until he started his long illustrious career with Thermon on October 27, 1969 which brought Jim and Charlene to San Marcos, Texas in the spring of 1971. Jim attended the Walter Britton Auction School in 1981 and persued his passion as an auctioneer and became a member of the Texas Auctioneers Association (TAA) in 1982. During his time with TAA, he earned the status of Senior Champion Auctioneer in 2003 as well as being awarded the Presidents Leadership Award in that same year, was inducted into the TAA Hall of Fame in 2010 and served as Board President in 2011-2012. Jim also served on various committees during his time with TAA including the Advisory Board with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation assisting in legislation for auctioneers. Jim was instrumental in helping create the TAA Green Book for Auctioneers as well as assisting in the creation of House Bill No. 135 which dealt with the requirements of an auctioneers license. Jim served as a 4-H Leader with the West San Marcos 4-H as well as serving on the Hays County Youth Show Board for many years. Jim had a passion for helping others which shined through in his passion for 4-H and Auctioneering. Jim was also an active member in the Canyon Bass Club and the New Braunfels Pigeon Club.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Alton Hamilton and Mary Miller Sample; granddaughter, Bernell Elizabeth Sample; sisters, Laverne Ingram and Nita Fitzgibbon. Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years, Charlene Suggs Sample; daughter, Debra Reneé Sample and grandson, Shawn Michael Garcia; son, James Trenton Sample and daughter-in-law, Laura Sample; granddaughters, Jennifer Renee, Amanda Nichole, and CorraLee Danielle; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will dearly miss him. A come and go pot luck style gathering in his memory will be held at Dick's Classic Car Museum, 120 Stagecoach Trail, San Marcos, Texas 78666, on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. with a memorial service at 12:30 pm.
